Cannot forget India’s 3-0 Test series loss to NZ: Gambhir
**Gambhir Reflects on India’s 3-0 Test Series Loss to New Zealand**
*By Gaurav Tripathi | October 11, 2025*
Gautam Gambhir, head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, has opened up about the shocking 3-0 Test series defeat India suffered against New Zealand at home in late 2024. This loss marked India’s first Test series defeat on home soil in 12 years, a result that Gambhir admits is hard to forget.
“If I am being honest, and speak from the heart, I don’t think that in my coaching tenure, I can ever forget that,” Gambhir told JioHotstar.
**Learning from Past Failures**
Gambhir emphasized the importance of remembering past failures as a means to learn and improve. “I have told this to the boys as well, it is important to look forward, but sometimes it is also important to remember the past as well,” he said.
He revealed that everyone in the dressing room had expected India to easily defeat New Zealand before the series began, which made the outcome even more surprising.
**Historical Context and Impact**
The 3-0 whitewash was not only a rarity but also the first time since 2000 that India failed to win a home Test series, the last being a 2-0 loss to South Africa. This defeat severely dented India’s chances of qualifying for a third World Test Championship final. Ultimately, India failed to make the final after losing the subsequent series 3-1 to Australia on their turf.
Currently, India is engaged in the second and final Test against the West Indies in Delhi, aiming to bounce back in their ongoing campaign.
**Farewell to Legends: Rohit, Kohli, and Ashwin**
The final Test against New Zealand in Mumbai also marked the last home game for three Indian cricket stalwarts — Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
Ashwin announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket in December 2024, while Sharma and Kohli announced their Test retirements in May 2025. Despite stepping away from Test cricket, all three will appear in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, starting October 19 in Perth.
