**Punjab and Haryana Ban Coldrif Cough Syrup Following Child Deaths in Madhya Pradesh**

Chandigarh: In the wake of the tragic deaths of 14 children reportedly linked to the consumption of Coldrif cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh, the states of Punjab and Haryana have imposed a ban on the product.

The Punjab government, in an order issued on Monday, stated that Coldrif syrup has been declared “not of standard quality” by the government analyst, drug testing laboratory, and Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) of Madhya Pradesh. The order highlighted the seriousness of the matter, noting the syrup’s association with recent child fatalities in Chhindwara district.

Consequently, the product is now completely prohibited for sale, distribution, and use throughout Punjab with immediate effect, in the interest of public safety.

The order further directed all retailers, distributors, registered medical practitioners, and hospitals within the state to refrain from purchasing, selling, or utilizing Coldrif syrup. It also requested that any existing stocks of the drug be reported to the FDA promptly.

Health officials suspect the cough syrup, which is manufactured in Tamil Nadu, was adulterated with diethylene glycol — a highly poisonous substance harmful to human health. This contamination is believed to have caused the recent fatalities.

Authorities continue to investigate the matter to prevent further tragedies linked to substandard medicines.
