LDP Launches New Leadership Team Led by Aso and Takaichi Factions
The new lineup is dominated by members from the Aso faction and Takaichi’s inner circle, who supported her in the recent party presidential election.
“I want to turn today’s anxieties and uncertainties about the future into hope and dreams. I will dedicate myself fully to that mission,” Takaichi said.
Vice President Aso added, “Under President Takaichi’s new leadership, we will work together for the revival of the LDP.”
In the reshuffle, former Prime Minister Aso returns as vice president, while former General Council Chair Suzuki—Aso’s brother-in-law—has been appointed secretary-general. Former Economic Security Minister Kobayashi, who ran against Takaichi in the presidential race, was named Policy Research Council chair.
Former Minister for Children and Gender Equality Arimura, from the Aso faction, will serve as General Council chair, and former National Public Safety Commission chair Furuya, a close aide to Takaichi, was chosen as election strategy chief.
Kobayashi said, “We will manage the Policy Research Council in a way that ensures the party’s policies truly reflect the voices and aspirations of the people.”
In addition, former Policy Research Council Chair Hagiuda—previously part of the dissolved Abe faction and entangled in a political funds reporting scandal—was appointed deputy secretary-general.
The new executives are set to meet Komeito later in the day for coalition negotiations. Ahead of the meeting, Komeito held an emergency executive session to coordinate its response.
The party has expressed concern over Takaichi’s views on historical issues, including her visits to Yasukuni Shrine, as well as her calls for stricter foreigner-related policies.
This afternoon’s coalition meeting is expected to be Takaichi’s first major political test under the new administration.
