All India & South Asia Rugby Tournament: Bombay Gymkhana Defeat Delhi Rebels Convincingly
Hosts and former champions Bombay Gymkhana launched their campaign in the 90th All India & South Asia Rugby Tournament with a convincing 41-7 win against Delhi Rebels in the concluding match of the day, played under lights.
Enjoying a handy 17-0 lead at half-time, Bombay Gymkhana maintained their momentum after the change of ends, effectively snuffing out the lukewarm challenge from their opponents. This victory secured their place in the semi-finals, where they will face Future Hope Harlequins on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, defending champions Delhi Hurricanes overcame a jittery first-half performance to defeat Maharashtra State Police 25-5. Though Delhi Hurricanes dominated possession during the evening session, they struggled to translate their superiority into points in the first half. However, after the break, they came up with three tries, improving their performance, while the state cops were unable to mount any serious challenge against the holders.
Maharashtra State Police, who failed to open their account in the first half, couldn’t find rhythm against one of the tournament favourites. This result booked Delhi Hurricanes a semi-finals berth.
In the opening match of the day, Kolkata-based club Future Hope Harlequins edged out Magician Foundation India 30-25 in extra-time. The win was particularly commendable as Future Hope played almost the entire match one man short after Gopi Yadav received a straight red card for serious foul play midway through the first half. Despite this setback, Future Hope managed to hold off a spirited second-half challenge from Magician Foundation India.
Calcutta Cricket & Football Club (CC&FC), relying on a dominant first-half display, made light work of their city rivals Sergeants Institute with a resounding 32-15 victory, advancing comfortably to the last four stage of the competition.
Following a rest day tomorrow, the tournament will resume on Wednesday with the semi-finals scheduled. The first semi-final will see CC&FC take on the defending champions, Delhi Hurricanes.
