Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has sparked criticism from opposition parties after refusing to answer certain questions during the ongoing socio-economic and educational survey being conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes.
The survey, which commenced on September 22 and is set to conclude on October 7, involved enumerators visiting households, including Shivakumar’s residence in Bengaluru’s Sadashivnagar, to collect data.
### Shivakumar Frustrated Over Survey Process
Shivakumar appeared visibly frustrated with the lengthy nature of the survey and the personal nature of some questions. He advised officials to simplify the process and concentrate on essential data points such as caste, educational qualifications, and government benefits received by households.
He also questioned the relevance of inquiries concerning cattle rearing and gold possession, rhetorically asking if he was expected to start a poultry business, signaling his discomfort with certain aspects of the questionnaire.
### Opposition Parties Criticize the Congress Government
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular) (JDS) have strongly criticized the Congress government for what they describe as a “confused and poorly planned” survey exercise.
State BJP chief BY Vijayendra stated that Shivakumar’s reaction illustrates the confusion caused by the survey. He accused the government of rushing into the survey without adequate preparation and highlighted the poor timing, given Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent announcement to include caste enumeration in the national census.
### JDS Joins BJP in Condemning the Survey
The Janata Dal (Secular) also echoed the BJP’s criticism. The party pointed out that Shivakumar himself refused to answer several survey questions. They further alleged that he rejected the caste census survey model and the questions prepared by “Rahul Gandhi and team” without providing proper information.
As the survey approaches its conclusion, the criticism from opposition parties has intensified, turning the process into a contentious political issue in Karnataka.
