Star Pakistan batsman Babar Azam is set to participate in the upcoming Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the country’s premier domestic first-class tournament, as part of his preparations for the Test series against South Africa starting October 12.
According to reports, Babar will represent Lahore Whites in the tournament. This move comes shortly after he was dropped from Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad but retained for the crucial Test series against the Proteas.
**Test Series Preparation**
The next Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match on October 6 will provide Babar with a vital opportunity to get match practice ahead of the South Africa Tests. He last featured in a Test match in January 2025 and has been limited to ODI cricket since then.
Other key Test hopefuls such as Mohammad Rizwan, Salman Ali Agha, Hasan Ali, and Sajid Khan have also been instructed to participate in this domestic tournament. This strategy is aimed at helping players regain form and adapt to red-ball conditions ahead of the series.
**Addressing Team Struggles**
Pakistan’s Test team has struggled recently, prompting the management to take proactive steps. By involving core players in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the team hopes to boost confidence and improve overall performance before the South Africa Tests.
**Babar Azam’s Career Overview**
Despite being one of Pakistan’s top batsmen, Babar has been excluded from the T20I setup but remains a key figure in Test and ODI formats. In 59 Test matches, he has scored 4,235 runs at an average of 42.77, including nine centuries and 29 half-centuries.
Babar was formerly Pakistan’s captain across all formats. However, the board later implemented split captaincy roles, with Babar continuing to play a pivotal role in the Test and ODI teams.
