**OpenAI Acquires AI-Backed Personal Finance App Roi**
*By Dwaipayan Roy | Oct 04, 2025, 10:19 AM*
OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Roi, an artificial intelligence-driven personal finance app. The news was shared by Roi’s CEO and co-founder, Sujith Vishwajith. Unlike typical tech industry acqui-hires, only Vishwajith from Roi’s four-person team is transitioning to OpenAI. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
**Roi to Cease Operations Post-Acquisition**
Following the acquisition, Roi will discontinue its services and stop operating as of October 15. This aligns with OpenAI’s recent pattern of acqui-hires, which also include companies such as Context.ai, Crossing Minds, and Alex. The move reflects OpenAI’s strategic focus on personalization and life management as the next frontier for AI products.
**About Roi and Its Evolution**
Founded in 2022 and based in New York, Roi raised $3.6 million in early-stage funding from notable investors including Balaji Srinivasan, Spark Capital, Gradient Ventures, and Spacecadet Ventures.
Roi was designed to unify a user’s financial footprint — encompassing stocks, cryptocurrency, decentralized finance (DeFi), real estate, and NFTs — into a single platform. It provided tracking tools, insightful analytics, and facilitated trades. Additionally, the app featured a financially savvy AI companion that personalized responses based on user preferences.
**How Roi Fits Into OpenAI’s Consumer Product Vision**
Roi’s approach to personalization complements OpenAI’s expanding consumer product lineup. OpenAI’s initiatives include Pulse, which delivers personalized news and content briefings during users’ sleep, and the Sora app, an AI-generated content platform that rivals TikTok and features personal cameos from users.
Moreover, OpenAI’s Instant Checkout enables seamless shopping and purchasing experiences directly within ChatGPT.
The acquisition of Roi underscores OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing personalization and life management through advanced AI technologies, signaling exciting developments ahead in the consumer AI space.
