Heavy rains likely in parts of Andhra, orange alert issued by weather department
The depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and is likely to cross the Odisha and adjoining Andhra Pradesh coasts between Gopalpur and Paradip on Thursday night, the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre said, reported IANS.
The system is currently located around 300 km from Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, and 400 km from Paradip. Parts of Visakhapatnam city have already been hit by heavy rainfall and gusty winds, resulting in the inundation of low-lying areas. Power supply was disrupted in some parts of the city.
Winds of 40-50 kmph are expected at isolated places along Coastal Andhra Pradesh and the Yanam region. The Cyclone Warning Centre has issued an orange alert for several districts in north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated, according to IANS.
The affected districts include Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Yanam, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema, and East Godavari.
Moderate to heavy rain is also likely in West Godavari, Eluru, NTR, Krishna, Guntur, Palnadu, Bapatla, and Prakasam districts, officials added.
Agriculture Minister K. Atchannaidu has urged officials to remain alert, especially in north coastal Andhra Pradesh. He held discussions with the Collector and Superintendent of Police of Srikakulam district to assess flood preparedness and reviewed the situation in the Nagavali and Vamsadhara rivers, the news agency reported on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Krishna and Godavari rivers are showing signs of improvement, with flood levels gradually receding. At Prakasam Barrage, the inflow was recorded at 3.84 lakh cusecs, while 3.99 lakh cusecs were being released downstream.
According to the Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority, the inflow at Prakasam Barrage on Thursday was 3.84 lakh cusecs, and authorities were releasing 3.99 lakh cusecs downstream. They have withdrawn the first flood warning at Prakasam Barrage as a result.
Similarly, floodwater in the Godavari River is also receding. At Dowleswaram, both inflow and outflow were around 12.05 lakh cusecs. The first flood warning there has now been withdrawn.
The Disaster Management Authority has advised people to remain vigilant until the floodwater completely subsides, IANS reported.
