**Meta Will Use Your Private AI Chats to Serve Ads**

Meta has announced plans to use conversations with its AI chatbot to enhance ad targeting across its platforms. The company states that data from these interactions will be used to “personalize the content and ads” users see on Facebook, Instagram, and other Meta services. This new feature is set to go live on December 16, with notifications about the update starting from October 7.
### How the New Ad Targeting Method Works
Christy Harris, Meta’s privacy policy manager, explained that users’ interactions with the AI chatbot will serve as an additional input for tailoring feeds and advertisements. For example, if a user discusses hiking with the chatbot, they might later receive recommendations for hiking groups or ads for hiking gear.
This marks a significant shift from traditional ad targeting methods, which typically do not incorporate one-on-one conversations as data points.
### User Consent and Data Collection
The new feature will be rolled out in most regions globally, excluding the UK, EU, and South Korea. Meta has confirmed that users will not have the option to opt out of this data collection process.
However, the company assures users that the AI chatbots will avoid collecting information related to sensitive topics such as religious views, sexual orientation, or political beliefs.
### Monetizing AI Tools at Scale
Despite concerns around privacy, Meta’s generative AI tools already attract over 1 billion monthly active users across its family of apps.
This move aligns Meta with other tech giants like Google and Amazon, who are also monetizing their AI technologies, mainly through cloud-based services. However, Meta’s approach—leveraging AI chat interactions directly for ad targeting—is unprecedented in its scale and scope.
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily digital experiences, this development marks a bold step toward personalized advertising, raising important questions about privacy and consent in the AI era.
