Heavy rains lash parts of Delhi, chokes traffic
Social media was flooded with reports of traffic snarls, particularly near Tikona Park close to Jamia Millia Islamia. Commuters experienced a 25-minute jam on the flyover near the Radisson Hotel on NH-48, affecting travel from Delhi to Gurugram.
Heavy traffic was also reported in northwest Delhi, with areas around Netaji Subhash Place in Pitampura and major stretches of the Outer Ring Road witnessing slow-moving vehicles, according to PTI. While the rainfall provided some relief from the recent spell of muggy weather, it compounded travel woes across the city.
In South Delhi, busy roads such as Mahatma Gandhi Road, NH-48, and Captain Gaur Marg from Lajpat Nagar experienced severe congestion. Traffic was bumper-to-bumper on Mathura Road, Old Rohtak Road, parts of ITO, and the stretch from Mahatma Gandhi Road to GT Karnal Road, a commuter posted on social media.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature on Tuesday was expected to settle around 35 degrees Celsius, which is 5.4 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 28 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity stood at 74 percent at 8:30 am.
The IMD forecasted a generally cloudy sky with light rain or drizzle throughout the day.
Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 114 at 8 am, placing it in the moderate category, as per data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The traffic police advised commuters to plan their journeys in advance and avoid waterlogged roads wherever possible, as reported by PTI.
Meanwhile, adverse weather conditions impacted flights at the Delhi airport on Tuesday afternoon. At least five flights were diverted to Jaipur between 12:15 pm and 12:30 pm, according to an official cited by the news agency.
Heavy rains lashed parts of Delhi-NCR on Tuesday, prompting airlines to issue advisories that flight operations might be affected. An IndiGo spokesperson said in a post on X at 12:49 pm, “Persistent rainfall and thunderstorms are currently affecting Delhi, leading to possible delays in flight operations. Our teams are closely monitoring the situation to ensure your journey resumes as soon as conditions improve.”
