3 officers dead, 2 injured in York County shooting
NORTH CODORUS, Pa. — Three police officers were killed and two others injured in a shooting Wednesday in southern Pennsylvania, state police confirmed.
“We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country,” Governor Josh Shapiro said. “This kind of violence is not OK, we need to do better as a society,” he added.
The shooting occurred in North Codorus Township, about 115 miles (185 km) west of Philadelphia, near the Maryland border, authorities reported.
At a news conference, Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris said, “The grief will be unbearable but we will bear it. We will not rest until we conduct a full, fair, and competent investigation into this matter.”
York Hospital is treating two people in serious condition and has increased security protocols in response to the incident.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi described the violence against police officers as “a scourge on our society.” She also noted that federal agents are on the scene to assist local law enforcement.
“Please send prayers to the officers and those involved in the shooting in York County,” Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis said in a social media post.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday is also at the scene. He urged residents on social media to “follow the instructions of local law enforcement” and expressed his prayers for everyone involved.
A local school district issued a shelter-in-place order as a precaution, although officials confirmed that schools and students were not involved in the shooting. The order was lifted later in the afternoon. Authorities had advised holding students and staff indoors while several area roads remained closed.
The shooting took place on a rural road in south-central Pennsylvania, winding through agricultural land surrounded by a barn, a goat farm, and soybean and corn fields.
Details about the individuals involved in the shooting have not been released. Police have kept people well away from the scene, with about 30 police vehicles blocking off roads in the rolling farmland.
“Pennsylvania State Police, Northern Regional Police, and numerous emergency responders are at the scene. The York County Commissioners are monitoring the situation closely and praying for all those involved,” the county stated.
This tragic event follows an incident in February when an officer in the area was killed during a hospital siege. A man armed with a pistol and zip ties had taken staff members hostage in an intensive care unit before a shootout left both the suspect and an officer dead.
