15-Year-Old Killed As Canada Cops Open Fire On Masked Teens
Canadian Police Investigate Death of 15-Year-Old Shot in Longueuil
Canadian authorities are investigating the death of Nooran Rezayi, a 15-year-old boy who was fatally shot by police officers in Longueuil, Quebec. The incident has prompted an independent and impartial investigation led by Quebec’s police watchdog.
Brigitte Bishop, director of Quebec’s Office of Independent Investigations (OIIQ), addressed the media at a press conference, assuring the public that her unit is conducting a thorough and unbiased probe into Rezayi’s death.
The Background of the Incident
On Sunday, police received a call reporting a group of masked teenagers allegedly armed in Longueuil, a city located less than 10 miles (16 km) east of Montreal. Officers arrived at the scene shortly before 3 p.m. and made contact with the group.
Witnesses told The Guardian that police shouted “stop” twice before opening fire towards the teenagers. Nooran Rezayi was struck by at least one bullet and later pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to police, the only weapon recovered from the scene belonged to one of the officers. Investigators also retrieved a baseball bat and ski masks but have not disclosed further details due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Family’s Response
Rezayi’s family, who immigrated to Quebec from Afghanistan, expressed frustration over the police response. They reported that officers did not visit their home until nearly six hours after the shooting.
“We sat here, not knowing. And then they came and told us he was gone,” a family member said.
Ongoing Investigation
Brigitte Bishop emphasized that five investigators have been assigned to the case. She acknowledged the community’s need for answers and urged the public to trust the independent office handling the investigation.
“A lot of people are trying to understand what’s going on. I totally understand that, but they’re doing certain private investigations and they’re meeting with people,” Bishop said. “You have to trust us. We’re the ones who are doing the investigation. We’re an independent office. Our mission is to shed light on what happened and that’s what we’re going to do.”
The investigation remains active as authorities work to clarify the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
