Update on Mark Harmon’s Career Plans Amidst ‘NCIS’ Return
Mark Harmon May Return to Acting After Semi-Retirement
Mark Harmon may be making a return to the acting world. According to a new article from the National Examiner, the 74-year-old actor is reportedly “bored” with his semi-retirement. This restlessness has led to him soon appearing in a new episode of *NCIS*, marking a comeback since his retirement from the series in 2021.
The upcoming episode, a crossover between *NCIS* and *NCIS: Origins*, will see Harmon reprise his iconic role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. A source told the Examiner that this guest star role “made him realize how much he misses being in front of the camera.”
When Harmon stepped away from *NCIS* after 18 seasons, his character Gibbs also retired and moved to Alaska. Since then, the actor has been keeping busy working on a spy novel, producing *NCIS: Origins*, and playing Jamie Lee Curtis’ husband in the recent Disney film *Freaky Friday*.
“Mark tried to enjoy the downtime, but the truth is, he misses the routine, the crew, the fans, the whole buzz of being on set,” the source revealed.
Paramount and CBS are reportedly eager to bring him back to *NCIS* full-time, knowing that Gibbs is the show’s most iconic character. However, Harmon appears to be looking beyond the *NCIS* universe. He is “saying he wants to stretch himself” and has started exploring projects outside the franchise, including movies.
“He’s open to the right project that will keep him busy and inspired,” the source added. Harmon’s wife, actress Pam Dawber, “would be glad if he got out of the house again.”
Mark Harmon is turning 75 next year but, according to insiders, “he’s got plenty of gas left in the tank and the truth is he’s just not ready to retire — he probably never will be!”
