Tuscaloosa Riverwalk Bridge to close for two weeks for repairs
The Tuscaloosa Riverwalk bridge near Jack Warner Parkway will close on Monday for two weeks as the city replaces hand railings.
Sarah Gilmore, executive director of strategic communications for the city of Tuscaloosa, explained that the bridge cannot be repaired one side at a time. Therefore, it must be fully closed during the repairs to ensure patrons can safely enjoy the Riverwalk during the warmer months.
“We are going through and repairing those bridges and doing a comprehensive inventory on any maintenance they may need so we can keep them as safe as possible,” Gilmore said.
The bridge is part of the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk, a trail system stretching several miles that connects parks and downtown areas. It allows patrons to safely cross the roadway while walking, running, or biking downtown.
Students say the temporary shutdown may impact their use of the Riverwalk. Claire Rawlins, a freshman majoring in biology and math, visits the Riverwalk three to four days a week and often uses it as her primary running route. She said the closure limits where she feels comfortable running.
“There aren’t good places to run on campus because there’s usually too much foot traffic,” Rawlins said. “The trail is just safer than running downtown, especially for female runners.”
Although Rawlins hasn’t noticed the bridge being in disrepair, she appreciates the upcoming repairs and said she might use the treadmill as an alternative during the closure.
Other students who frequent the Riverwalk say outdoor exercise is difficult to replace. Carlee Longest, a freshman nursing major, said the bridge’s closure will be “hard to work around” since she gets most of her exercise outdoors.
“If they think that the upgrade is needed, and that makes it nice, then that’ll be great,” Longest said.
