Steph Curry heroics helps push Warriors past Spurs in NBA Cup thriller, 109-108
After scoring 46 points in a comeback win over the Spurs on Wednesday, Steph Curry wasn’t done in San Antonio. In the rematch on Friday against the San Antonio Spurs, the Golden State Warriors’ point guard caught fire again.
Curry didn’t waste any time picking up where he left off, scoring 10 points in the first quarter. After finishing the first half with 18 points, Curry ripped the Spurs for 17 points in the third quarter alone, knocking down four 3-pointers during that stretch.
Yet, with each flurry of points from Curry, the Spurs were able to answer and keep pace with the Warriors. Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox led the Spurs into the fourth quarter, trailing by only two points despite Curry’s fireworks.
In the fourth quarter, Wembanyama got rolling. Behind the French big man, the Spurs jumped out to a 10-point lead with 7:25 remaining in the game. However, a 10-point lead wasn’t enough to put away Curry. He scored Golden State’s next 10 points to chip away at San Antonio’s advantage.
With the Warriors trying to stay alive down the stretch, it wasn’t Curry, but Gary Payton II and Brandin Podziemski who came up clutch for the Warriors. With under five minutes remaining, the Warriors drilled three straight 3-pointers. Two of those triples came from Payton II and the other from Podziemski.
Payton II’s second 3-pointer gave the Warriors a one-point advantage with 3:37 remaining in the fourth quarter. As the game went down to the wire in a thrilling finish, Curry knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Warriors a one-point lead with just six seconds remaining.
On the next possession, Fox’s attempt at a game-winner came up short, locking up the win for the Warriors, 109-108.
Curry finished with a season-high 49 points on 16-of-27 shooting from the field, including nine made 3-pointers. He also contributed four rebounds and two assists. Jimmy Butler added 21 points, eight rebounds, and two steals in 35 minutes, while Podziemski tacked on 10 points off the bench.
For the Spurs, Wembanyama tallied 26 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and a steal in 26 minutes. Fox recorded 24 points with 10 assists and three steals. Julian Champagnie added 14 points off the bench.
With back-to-back wins over the Spurs, the Warriors improve to 8-6 on the season and 2-1 on their current road trip. Golden State opened this road swing with a nightmare blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Spurs now have only four losses on the season, with two of them coming against the Warriors.
The Warriors will get Saturday off before resuming their road trip in New Orleans on Sunday at 4 p.m. PT.
