Softbank dumped its entire NVIDIA (NVDA) stake for $5.83 billion in October 2025
Softbank made headlines in the AI industry this morning by selling its entire stake in NVIDIA, the leading company at the heart of the current AI boom. According to reports, the proceeds from this significant sale will be used to fund a massive investment in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.
News of Softbank’s NVIDIA (NVDA) sale was first reported by CNBC. During a presentation, Softbank CFO Yoshimitsu Goto stated, “We want to provide a lot of investment opportunities for investors, while we can still maintain financial strength.”
According to CNBC sources, the $5.83 billion raised from Softbank’s sale of NVIDIA shares will be combined with cash from a separate T-Mobile stake sale. In total, these funds will support a planned $22.5 billion investment into OpenAI.
The announcement appeared to impact both companies, as news of the sale caused the share valuations of both NVIDIA and Softbank to drop.
A Softbank spokesperson emphasized to CNBC that the decision to sell has nothing to do with doubts about AI technology or its future prospects.
