Sarkozy to be put in solitary confinement – media
**Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Sentenced to Prison for Campaign-Funding Irregularities**
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has made history as the first leader of France in modern times to serve prison time. Convicted of criminal conspiracy related to irregularities in his 2007 election campaign funding, Sarkozy was sentenced to five years behind bars by a Paris court on September 25.
The case centers around a 2005 plot in which Sarkozy allegedly sought secret campaign funds from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. According to the court, Sarkozy offered to help restore Libya’s standing in international affairs in exchange for these payments.
Presiding over the case, the judge highlighted the “exceptional gravity” of the offense and ordered that Sarkozy begin his jail term immediately, even if he chooses to appeal the verdict. Reports from AFP indicate that the former president, now 70 years old, will serve his prison sentence in solitary confinement.
Sarkozy served as President of France from 2007 to 2012 and has now become the first former leader of an EU member state to be jailed. His sentence is expected to commence on Tuesday.
