Sarah Strong’s double-double leads top-ranked UConn past Ohio State 100-68
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Sarah Strong delivered a stellar all-around performance with 29 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, five steals, and three blocked shots as top-ranked UConn dominated Ohio State 100-68 on Sunday. Azzi Fudd contributed 19 points and seven assists, while freshman Blanca Quinonez came off the bench to score 18 points. Serah Williams also added 12 points for the Huskies, who improved to 4-0.
Despite trailing by just one point late in the first half, Ohio State (2-1) was overwhelmed in the second and third quarters, being outscored 52-27. During that stretch, Strong tallied 21 points, five assists, and four steals. Fudd, who missed all five of her shots in the opening quarter, found her rhythm in the second, connecting on three 3-pointers.
Ohio State struggled offensively, failing to make a field goal in the final 6:06 of the first half and committing nine turnovers in the last 5:03. The Huskies took control by scoring the first eight points of the second quarter and closing the half on an 11-0 run.
The Buckeyes started strong from beyond the arc, making four of their first five 3-pointers before missing seven straight attempts. By the time T’yana Todd broke the drought, UConn held a commanding 28-point lead.
This matchup carried added significance, as Ohio State had won the previous meeting during the 2023 NCAA Tournament, snapping UConn’s streak of 16 consecutive Elite Eight appearances and 13 straight trips to the Final Four.
Notably, several WNBA head coaches were in attendance, including Jose Fernandez of the Dallas Wings, Rachid Meziane of the Connecticut Sun, and Sandy Brondello of the expansion Toronto Tempo.
