Rick Moranis Reprised His Most Beloved Role In A Hilarious The Goldbergs Episode
Canadian character actor Rick Moranis is one of the most beloved comedic performers of the 1980s. Following his breakthrough on “Second City Television” (SCTV) on NBC, Moranis appeared in several iconic cinematic comedies such as *Ghostbusters*, *Little Shop of Horrors*, *Honey, I Shrunk the Kids*, and *Parenthood*, among others.
Since the 1990s, Moranis has largely stepped away from live-action roles, with his most prominent work being voice acting projects, including the 2003 Disney animated film *Brother Bear*. Despite being out of the mainstream limelight for roughly three decades, he made a surprising return in the ABC sitcom *The Goldbergs*, reprising arguably his most beloved role: Dark Helmet from *Spaceballs*.
In *The Goldbergs* Season 5 episode aptly titled “Spaceballs,” Adam Goldberg (played by Sean Giambrone) attempts to start a Mel Brooks club at his school after watching Brooks’ 1987 sci-fi comedy, which parodied George Lucas’ *Star Wars* franchise. Toward the end of the episode, Adam wields a Schwartz-ring (a lightsaber parody) against Dark Helmet, the original film’s antagonist. Although another actor physically portrayed Dark Helmet in the episode, Moranis lent his voice to the character for the first time in more than 30 years.
Fans can look forward to Moranis reprising Dark Helmet once again in the long-awaited sequel, *Spaceballs 2*, which is set for a 2027 release—marking 40 years since the original film hit theaters.
Since his appearance on *The Goldbergs*, Rick Moranis’ only television credit has been an episode of the Disney+ documentary series *Prop Culture*, where he reflected on the making of *Honey, I Shrunk the Kids*.
There had been plans for a legacy sequel titled *Shrunk*, developed by Josh Gad, which was expected to mark Moranis’ first live-action role in nearly 30 years. However, Gad recently revealed that the project stalled at Disney due to budgetary concerns.
While fans eagerly await Moranis’ return to the big screen, his contributions to comedy and voice acting continue to be celebrated across generations.
