Open data: AI is here to help, and to help itself

Principles intended to make research data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) have gained increasing traction since they were endorsed by the G20 nations in 2016. Yet, scientists still find their practical application a challenge.

Tools to help researchers adhere to FAIR principles are increasingly available. However, there are concerns that commercial actors risk compromising the goals of open science.

According to Tereza Szybisty, research project manager at the European open science non-profit OpenAIRE, the barriers to implementing the FAIR principles include gaps in infrastructure, limited incentives, and a lack of data stewards. These barriers vary between countries, institutions, and disciplines.

“Some areas already have strong infrastructures and support systems in place, while others are still developing them,” Szybisty told Science|Business.
