Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded for metal-organic frameworks
Scientists Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi have won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work in the development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that dates back to 1989.
Richard Robson, aged 88, is affiliated with the University of Melbourne, Australia; Susumu Kitagawa, 74, is with Japan’s Kyoto University; and Omar M. Yaghi, 60, is based at the University of California, Berkeley.
The trio developed a new form of molecular architecture known as metal-organic frameworks. These structures have a wide range of applications, including harvesting water from desert air, capturing CO2, storing toxic gases, and catalyzing chemical reactions, according to a statement.
