Lady Wildcats send one to play at next level

Meridian High School girls basketball program will be represented in Alabama come fall after the Lady Wildcats cheered one senior signing in a ceremony Friday at the school’s multipurpose building. Kimora Hughes will play for Troy University following graduation later this year. So far this season, Hughes has averaged 15 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block per game. In the Lady Wildcats’ game Thursday at Madison Central, she was responsible for 27 of the teams 55 total points. Tre Collins, head coach for the Lady Wildcats basketball team, said Hughes is a part of the Wildcat family and her impact on the program will continue on through the lessons she taught the teammates coming after her. With Troy being only three and a half hours away, Hughes can be sure her teammates will be watching her continued success. “You have a part in the ones that will sign after you because of the example that you sent, and so it’s a celebration for the Lady Wildcats, not just the one, but we are so extremely proud of you, and I’m just grateful to God that he’s given me the opportunity to coach you guys,” he said. Hughes said she decided on joining the Trojans because of the environment and the mentorship the college is able to provide. Having that support, she said, will help her flourish and grow as she takes the next step in her career. “It’s going to be a big change for me. I feel like it’s going to be good for me. I feel like Troy is a school where I can thrive.” Meridian Public School District Athletic Director Cheyanne Trussell congratulated Hughes on her achievement on reaching the next level of her athletic and academic career. While there will be challenges, he said the most important thing is to graduate with a college degree. “The most important thing to get out of that institution is that degree,” he said. “You’re going to have adversity. You know that’s going to happen in life. The biggest thing is whether that adversity interferes with your focus.” As the Lady Wildcats celebrate Hughes for her success, Collins said she will not be alone in signing this year. All of the senior class is moving on in some capacity, he said, and announcements for the other players will be made in the near future. “I’m so proud of all of you, and we can’t want to celebrate the rest of you,” he said.
