‘It’s scary’: Dem candidate speaks out after Trump admin’s ‘surreal’ prosecution of her
Progressive Democratic congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh has spoken out against the Trump administration following her indictment for participating in a protest against an immigration raid in Illinois.
The indictment, filed on October 23, accuses Abughazaleh of one count of conspiracy and one count of forcibly impeding an officer. In an interview with NBC News, she stated that she plans to self-surrender to authorities next Wednesday and described the charges as a “political prosecution.”
Abughazaleh further discussed the prosecution during an appearance on the “Pod Save America” podcast alongside former Obama administration staffer Jon Lovett. She called the situation “scary” and “surreal,” but also “totally expected.”
“This is what this administration does,” Abughazaleh said. “They go after people who disagree with them, and this case is an attempt to criminalize protest, to criminalize freedom of speech, and to criminalize freedom of association. This is what authoritarians do.”
She continued, “They try to find any excuse to punish their political enemies, to punish populations they deem as enemies. We’ve seen that a lot in how ICE is functioning.”
Highlighting the Trump administration’s approach to immigration raids, Abughazaleh noted that officials have admitted to apprehending very few criminals during these operations. She suggested this points to a more troubling motive.
“That is one of the best examples to show that this has never been about crime,” she said. “This has never even been about immigration. This is about securing and cementing power for the Trump administration.”
