HGTV’s Tarek El Moussa Reveals a Random Fan Mail Saved His Life
Sometimes, the most offbeat things turn out to be the biggest blessings one could possibly imagine. This is exactly what happened to HGTV’s Tarek El Moussa. His career and life were spared thanks to an eagle-eyed HGTV viewer who spotted something unusual and urgently alerted him—an act that ultimately saved his life.
### A Fan Email That Saved Tarek El Moussa’s Life
Tarek El Moussa recently shared a heartfelt post on Instagram revealing how a fan’s email helped him detect his thyroid cancer early on. Captioning the post, “A fan’s email saved my life,” he explained in detail how this unexpected message changed everything.
“Going into Season 2 of *Flip or Flop*, I remember getting an eerie email from my production company saying they received a message from the network,” Tarek recalled. The email was from a registered nurse in Texas who noticed a lump on Tarek’s neck. She warned, “This is not a joke. He needs to get it checked out.”
Initially, Tarek had the lump checked but was only treated with nose spray and allergy medicine. However, after receiving the nurse’s email, he sought a second opinion from a new physician. The doctor performed a biopsy, which came back as atypical—meaning it could be cancer, or it could not.
### Facing the Diagnosis
Tarek then underwent exploratory surgery to determine the nature of the lump. “I woke up five hours later, my entire family looking down on me, crying,” he shared. The surgery confirmed that he had thyroid cancer. The doctors removed his thyroid gland along with several lymph nodes to prevent the spread of the disease.
While reviewing his old medical records, Tarek also noticed an irregular testicle exam. Trusting his instincts, he investigated further and, just 20 minutes later, found out he had testicular cancer as well.
### Battling Two Cancers at Age 31
“At 31, I was facing two different cancers and thinking I was going to die. I’m a young father,” Tarek said candidly. During this challenging time, HGTV even considered canceling *Flip or Flop*, but Tarek didn’t let that stop him.
“It was really important to me that I didn’t quit, to prove to myself and my family that nothing would stop me from building what I was building,” he explained. His perseverance paid off, and today, Tarek El Moussa is in a better place than ever before—both personally and professionally.

Tarek’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of how a vigilant eye and timely intervention can change the course of a life. It also highlights the importance of listening to your body and seeking multiple medical opinions when something feels off.
