Harvey Barnes sees one Scotland worry emphatically solved as Micah Richards approves epic nickname
Barnes was quizzed on defecting to Scotland after his Newcastle double sank Manchester City at St James’ Park Harvey Barnes threw a diplomatic rubber ear when pressed on whether he’d be up for answering any Scotland call for next summer’s World Cup. But he’s already been handed a fitting, Bert Vogts-style nickname if he does declare for Steve Clarke. The Newcastle winger qualifies through his grandparents and despite a friendly appearance for England against Wales five years ago, he is still eligible to pull on the dark blue. With Ben Gannon-Doak going under the knife after being stretched off during the epic win over Denmark, Scotland are short of genuine wide options. And Barnes showed exactly what he could bring with a deadly double for the Toon to sink Man City at St James’ Park on Saturday night. And after leaving the door open to a Scotland call up in the aftermath of World Cup qualification, Barnes was asked again about his international preferences. Former City star and pundit Micah Richards asked: “Can we expect you at the World Cup for Scotland?” Barnes then pretended he couldn’t hear through his headset, but wasn’t getting off that easily. Presenter Dave Jones joked: “The line’s gone!” Before asking: “Was this a come and get me plea to Steve Clarke then Harvey? Come on!” Barnes then gave the same sort of non-committal anwerr as earlier in the week, saying: “That isn’t on my mind at the minute. There’s a long way to go until the summer. “The club form for us hasn’t been there so as you can imagine the team my only focus has been the game tonight and the next period of games we’ve got coming up. “So I can’t say there was any thought in that, it was just getting the job done tonight. “I think someone said it was the gaffer’s first win against Man City, a couple of goals so a good night all round.” However, Richards quickly hit back with: “So that’s not a no then?” Jamie Redknapp then suggested a personal rebranding to make Barnes sound more Scottish, al la Berti Vogts when he was appointed as Scotland boss “Harvey McBarnes has a ring to it!” And it met with Richards’ approval: “Harvey McBarnes, I like it!”.
