Dramatic videos show the UPS plane ablaze and crash in a massive fireball

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Videos captured on phones, cars, and security cameras have documented the tragic final moments of a UPS cargo plane as it caught fire and crashed in a massive explosion just outside Louisville’s airport. The crash killed at least 12 people and carved a path of destruction on the ground.

The footage provides investigators and the public with multiple angles of the plane going down Tuesday in an area dotted with scrapyards and UPS facilities. Unfortunately, no survivors are expected.

One video, recorded by a vehicle’s dashcam, shows flames and smoke trailing from the wing as the jet barely clears a road, clips a building, and then vanishes behind an eruption of black smoke. Another recording from a business security camera captures the deafening sound of the plane’s impact, followed by a wall of fire and thick black smoke.

As the flames grew, a smaller blast rippled through the wreckage while sirens began to sound in the distance. Fire officials reported that the blaze stretched nearly a city block and destroyed much of the plane’s fuselage.

In yet another video, the UPS plane is seen lifting off the runway already on fire, then disappearing seconds later in an intense orange fireball. From a nearby street, a driver filmed the explosion and the towering black smoke rising above surrounding buildings. The smoke filled the sky as the vehicle backed away from the scene.

Additional street videos show a large pillar of black smoke towering over buildings and traffic, accompanied by the sound of sirens and flashing lights from emergency response vehicles.

The recordings of the crash have deeply affected the UPS pilot community. Robert Travis, president of the Independent Pilots Association, which represents 3,500 UPS pilots, expressed the collective grief.

“We’re just all heartbroken,” Travis said. “This is a tragedy that is even highlighted further by the video that’s out there circulating around the world due to the catastrophic, violent nature of the accident itself.”
