Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has been named the captain of Team India for the upcoming Hong Kong Sixes tournament. The exciting event, featuring 12 international teams, will take place from November 7 to 9 in Hong Kong.
Karthik will be joined by his former teammate R Ashwin in this fast-paced cricketing competition. The rest of Team India’s squad is yet to be announced.
“An Absolute Honor Leading Team India”
On his appointment as captain, Karthik expressed his excitement: “It is an absolute honor leading Team India at the Hong Kong Sixes.” He further shared that he looks forward to leading a group of players with remarkable records and aims to entertain fans by playing fearless and exciting cricket.
Enhanced Competition Welcomed by Cricket Hong Kong
Burji Shroff, Chairperson of Cricket Hong Kong, warmly welcomed Karthik’s appointment. “We are thrilled to welcome Dinesh Karthik as the captain of Team India for the Hong Kong Sixes 2025. His leadership and wealth of experience will add immense value to the competition. We are confident his presence will attract fans from across the globe to witness this spectacular cricketing festival,” said Shroff.
Karthik’s Career Transition
Karthik retired from Indian cricket after the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. This year, he featured in the SA20 league before moving into a coaching role with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). His transition was remarkably successful, as RCB clinched their maiden IPL title with Karthik serving as the batting coach and mentor.
Over his international career, Karthik has represented India across formats, playing 26 Tests, 94 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 60 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
A Look at Karthik’s IPL Career
In the Indian Premier League, Karthik played for six different teams and captained the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). His IPL captaincy record stands at 21 wins, 21 losses, and one tied match.
Throughout his IPL career, Karthik played for KKR, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Lions, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He scored a total of 4,842 runs at an average of 26.31, including 22 half-centuries.
The veteran wicketkeeper-batter featured in 257 IPL matches, ranking fourth-most appearances by a player in the tournament’s history.
