DC Mayor Announces City-Wide Curfew After Teenagers Create Mayhem
On Saturday, Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced an emergency order instituting a city-wide curfew for anyone under 18, beginning Saturday night. The curfew will go into effect at 11 p.m. on November 1 and last until 6 a.m. the following morning. It will continue nightly until November 5.
The order grants Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith the authority to identify “high risk” areas in the city. In these designated zones, the curfew can begin as early as 6 p.m.
This emergency action comes in response to recent chaos in and around the Navy Yard area, where five teens were arrested. The National Guard was also called in to break up several fights and help restore law and order.
According to Bowser’s office, the curfew is a direct response to the hundreds of youths involved in fights in the Navy Yard on Friday night. The curfew is set to start at 11 p.m. on Saturday and will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday, continuing nightly through Wednesday, November 5.
Additionally, Bowser’s emergency order allows Police Chief Pamela Smith to designate parts of the city as “high risk for disorderly conduct by youths.” In these areas, she can implement an earlier curfew starting at 6 p.m. Smith also has the authority to declare a zone a curfew area if eight or more juveniles have gathered or are likely to gather there.
This measure seeks to curb the recent unrest and ensure safety throughout the city.
